olive tree

March 2015

Buon giorno amici,

I wanted to let you know about some of the events happening here in March.

Here at Masseria della Zingara we have been very busy pruning the olive trees.  Springtime is very important to prune the trees, especially as last year we had a terrible season.   Due to too much humidity in May all our crops were very bad, and this has meant that the price of olive oil has gone up from Euro 5 per litre to Euro 8 per litre.  Some of the olive trees at the Masseria are nearly 300 years old and with good care they can produce between 10 – 15 litres of extra virgin olive oil every year.  Here in Puglia we produce more olive oil than any other region in Italy and we are very proud of this.

This month we will be holding our first textile course of the year – Colour Studies with Leslie Morgan.  Leslie has been teaching with us since we started courses at the Masseria over 5 years ago.  This course is all about using procion mix dyes to create harmonies and contrasts with your fabrics.   If you want to see more about Leslie’s courses visit her website www.committedtocloth.uk

Part of the added excitement of coming to the Masseria is eating the local food and visiting the local towns.   We are only 7km from the sea at Polignano a Mare, perched on top of a 20 metre high limestone cliff above the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic.  Polignano has a beautiful centro storico reached through the Porta Vecchia gate, there are white-washed streets with beautiful old churches and breathtaking panoramic views of the sea and coastline.  And of course – lots of fantastic pizzerias and gelateria!  My favourite is Bella Blu. . . what’s yours?

See you in April, when we will be talking about yoga and Easter festivals and food!

Ciao for now

Antonio
